Influenza testing may be used to help you diagnose an influenza infection (flu). Influenza is a viral respiratory infection that tends to be seasonal, usually first presenting in late fall and disappearing in early spring. Antiviral testing detects the presence of the virus in a sample of respiratory secretions. Testing is optimal within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms when a greater amount of the virus is present to be detected, and antiviral treatment can have the greatest impact.
Influenza testing can help rule out other illnesses and reduce the chances of people using unnecessary antibiotics while increasing the chances that they will receive antiviral therapy early in the illness when it is most effective.
